ANG AH TEE | 洪亞弟

SINGAPOREAN
b. 1943

Born in 1943, Ang Ah Tee is a second-generation Singapore watercolour, oil, and acrylic painter. Ang is best known for his lyrical landscape paintings inspired by his extensive travels around the world. A student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, between 1960 and 1962, Ang counts pioneer Nanyang artists Georgette Chen and Cheong Soo Pieng as his mentors. In 1977, Ang became a full-time artist. This enabled him to travel widely for sources of inspiration, and has painted scenes from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Egypt, Nepal, India, China, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore. Ang’s switch to the fast-drying medium of acrylic enabled him to combine the techniques of both watercolour and oil painting to create spontaneous semi-abstract landscapes. These paintings have a preference for a warm palette of reds, golds, browns, and yellows, and incorporate expressive textural colour blocks and Chinese ink-inspired strokes using a palette knife. Ang is also one of the nation’s most prolific artists, having held 14 solo exhibitions to date and participated in numerous group exhibitions internationally. In 2009, Ang received the Cultural Medallion for his contributions to visual arts in Singapore. Ang works remain well sought-after by collectors around the region and can be found in the collections of the National Gallery, Singapore, the Istana, Singapore, the Singapore Art Museum, Development Bank of Singapore, United Overseas Bank, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation, Shell, Singapore, and the permanent mission of the United Nations in New York, the United States.
